Conservative Man’s synth-pop tunes evoke a lush and lively atmosphere set in a not-too-distant space age or Atlantis-like world. Beginning as a solo project of frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ian McCarthy, the primarily Philadelphia-based band has expanded into a compelling live trio of bass, drums, and guitar, augmented by extensive samples. The band’s recent self-titled EP features upbeat tracks fit for hopeful nights and dance parties, but with melancholic undertones that evoke images from the imagination’s darker depths. With synths swirling above driving bass and drums, Conservative Man’s sound contains traces of some of Ian’s self-proclaimed inspirations including Depeche Mode, Radiohead, and the ever eloquent dictionary. Moreover, the influences of Britpop and Industrial rock are restructured and reflected in the band’s opaque lyrics and use of distortion.
Conservative Man recently played shows along the East Coast to promote the 5-song EP, including a Providence stop at Jerky’s, The Trash Bar in Brooklyn, and a packed house at Cambridge’s Middle East Upstairs. Their song "Mayday" from the Cambridge show is featured in the clip below. Like what you hear? Support the band by catching them on Friday, February 19th at T.T. the Bear’s, and stream the first EP track "Sirens of Television".
