It’s a shame that Twin Thousands don’t make it up from Brooklyn more often. The band members, clearly all veteran musicians with exceptional skills, mixed gentler songs with darker, more experimental tracks to offer a versatile show at T.T. the Bear’s on Wednesday.
As the first band on a bill presented by Ryan’s Smashing Life, Twin Thousands hit the stage in front of a relatively small and tame crowd. However, the combination of the band’s epic orchestration and the catchy mix of synthesizers and quirky instrumentation held the room in awe for the duration of their amazing 40-minute set. Gretta Cohn, who wore a charming red dress, used her cello to produce distorted and intriguing sounds that rivaled the wail of a musical saw. The band even managed to sneak in a few more electronic tunes from their other musical project, Power Player. Their live presence added even more energy to tracks, like on “Pirate Song” when all the band members sang out in jubilant voices. Further, the scratchy and haunting sounds of songs like “3way” were reminiscent of the cusp between sleep and consciousness, when the mind is treading the line between dream and nightmare. Wednesday leaned toward the dreamy, and was a pleasure for almost every type of concert go-er.
Ryan from the band was kind enough to give Foundwaves a few copies of Twin Thousands’ EP, “Like You A Lot” single (featuring remixes of the song), and LP. A limited number of them were printed, and adorned with the amazing artwork of Aaron James Powers (the design for the EP, left, was silk-screened directly on the cover). We would love to share a set or two with Foundwaves readers…and believe us, you’ll love them too. Email info@foundwaves.com with the subject heading “Twin Thousands Contest” for your chance to win hard copies of all three disks, and share the superb music with your friends.

Nice Shots. I was going to ask you who you were shooting for but lost track of you as the night progressed. I spoke to Ryan & Gretta and I hope to bring the band back to town late summer or in the Fall. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Hey Ryan…thanks for the shout-out. I meant to come say hi but was trying to track down Ryan Smith to ask about their LP. Great bill! Looking forward to seeing them again.
